It all started at the 2017 at the American Society of Landscape Architecture Annual Dinner.  The last table was filled with established, veteran Landscape Architects and young, fresh, new Landscape Architects and designers.  Our round table of introductions led me to the idea that it would be nice to hear and record the stories of our Hawai'i Landscape Architects that helped form our Landscape of today, especially since many of the founders are still present, or they have worked for some of the first Landscape Architects in Hawai'i.

This column that arrives at our door steps every other month, will hopefully teach, enlighten, and tell the stories about some of our treasured Landscape Architects, the history of our open spaces, our spectacular magnificent trees, and the ways of preserving and protecting our green environment.

Mahalo to the great insight that our thoughtful and wise leaders had some eons ago who had the insight to preserve some open spaces, to plan incredible public parks, and to design beautiful memorable Hawaiian landscapes.  Our Hawaiʹi has grown into its truly treasured island 'āina.

The 16 issues include articles about our treasured landscape architects who designed many of our most innovative and prominent landscapes, our incredible multi acre public parks, such as Kapi'olani Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, and our Diamond Head State Park, open spaces blessed by the Prince and Princess of Japan at the East West Center, Japanese religious gardens filled with exquisite water lotus, our grand 5  City and County Botanical Gardens, Sculptures within the landscapes, our Museums of wonder, spectacular magnificent trees, the history of food, the destruction from invasive insect pest species, our native Hawaiian ‘Ōhi‘a Lehua Forests, Chinatown, Pandemics, Parks, and Volunteering.  Along with the articles are photos taken by the author and historical photos from over a times long past century’s ago, thankfully provided by our historical photographer collector, Vince Sortino and the Hawai‘i State Archives.

I hope that you will enjoy and be enlightened by our stories of Hawai'i.
